Gene Russell Hellman, Beloved Resident of Kronenwetter community; Passed Away on May 5

The Kronenwetter community is mourning the passing of Gene Russell Hellman, who died on May 5, 2026, at the age of 84. His departure leaves behind a legacy of faith, integrity, wisdom, and deep love for family and friends. Gene’s life was defined by devotion—to his wife, his children, his grandchildren, his church, and his community—and his memory will continue to inspire those who knew him.

Born and raised in Dollar Bay, Michigan, Gene pursued higher education at Michigan Technological University, earning degrees in Applied Physics and later an MBA. It was during his college years in the Houghton/Hancock area that he met Ella Jean “Ginger” Hellman, the love of his life, at the Coffee Cup restaurant. Their love story, sparked by Gene’s quick wit and persistence, blossomed into more than 60 years of marriage, during which they built a beautiful life centered on faith, family, and community.

Gene’s professional journey reflected his intelligence, determination, and integrity. He began his career with General Motors, later worked for IBM and Wausau Insurance, and ultimately found his calling as a financial advisor with Lutheran Brotherhood, later Thrivent. His honesty and wisdom earned him lasting relationships with clients and colleagues alike. Beyond his career, Gene was a man of strong faith, helping found Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Kronenwetter and serving his community through leadership roles on the D.C. Everest School Board.

Known for his quick wit, remarkable memory, and gift for storytelling, Gene had a way of making every encounter meaningful. He loved people and seemed to run into someone he knew wherever he went. His stories carried lessons, humor, and advice, and his presence brought comfort and joy. Outside of work and service, Gene cherished time with family—whether hunting at “Bucksnort Lodge,” fishing, skiing, golfing, or creating treasured memories at the family cottage on Portage Lake, affectionately known as “Camp.”

Above all, Gene loved Ginger and his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Ella Jean “Ginger” Hellman; his children, Melany Kaiser (John), Matt Hellman (Patty), and Thad Hellman (Jennifer); and his treasured grandchildren, Caleb, Alina, Jacob, Bethany, Ben, Kaley, Treyton, and Lewis.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Edith Hellman, and his sister, Nancy Pfauth. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Kronenwetter. Gene will be remembered for his wisdom, humor, and the steady way he showed up for the people he loved. His stories, guidance, and presence will be deeply missed.
